Foodie Funk

The last few weeks feel like a bit of a gong show for me in the meal department and for this self proclaimed foodie to say she isn't inspired to cook, well, let's just say I'm in a funk. My family ate cereal for supper tonight and I didn't even want to make that (their Daddy did). Cooking is how I express my love for those I am feeding; maybe just don't feel loving this week. *cheeky grin*

There is so much talk about monthly menus and 30 day freezer menus among my circle of friends lately. We know this isn't exactly a new concept but it's one that does need a second look for many families. Let's face it, our families are getting larger again. Gone are the days of 1.5 children, two cars, a dog and two working parents. At least within the circles I follow, 3 or more children seem to be the norm, the second vehicle is a bonus and most of the time the Mom is staying at home. Stay-at-home Mom or not, these ideas are meant to save time and money. Who doesn't want that, no matter what your family looks like?

The Angry Turtle: Freezer Cooking
My creative and ever so thrifty pals seem to enjoy getting together to make up freezer meals in a large group exchange, thus increasing the variety of meals in their freezer waiting for those quick dinners. That sounds amazing to me these days. Here is where I stumble, the idea of doing only once big monthly shopping spree has a few more downs than ups. One is for the fresh produce. Obviously that needs to be done more often and I'm sure my pals do runs for such things also. Another, is that grocery shopping is an outing for me and since our move to the great white north, it's been my ONLY outing some weeks. Flyer or sale shopping can only be done weekly, but I do wonder how much  difference that might make on a monthly basis, really? So here is my compromise.
  1. Make a monthly menu plan (rather than my weekly one).
  2. Shop for the month except the fresh produce so I have stock on everything else I need.
  3. In that menu there will be at least one freezer meal per week that will be made on the 1st week's shop so that I get the benefit of a few meals ready to go.
  4. Have 1-2 slow cooker meals.
  5. I will resist the urge to seek out and buy those 50% off items that fill our remote, small town shelves daily. That will be the most tough one of all I think!
